There used to be a television show called “Name That Tune”. People always thought I would be good at it since I was a piano teacher. Yet, I was a total flop when it came to that show’s tunes. I couldn’t name them. Now if you ask, I could hum a few lines, but that was it. Even now, I cannot remember the name of the song I’m searching for in the music store.
Some others appear to be more interested in names than I am. For example, my friends at Wildtype Ranch http://wildtyperanch.com/) who sell pasture raised Angus beef, carefully name their cows. For example, a few years ago, we purchased a cow from them named Lola. Instead of saying that they are moving cow number “xxx” out of the front pasture, they just say they’re going out to get Sally or another gal.
Today, I read about a Texas business (http://www.buttersbrownies.com/) where the owner names her brownies. While one brownie is “Jane” it’s counterpart without nuts is “Sane Jane.” She has even named a brownie after her ballet teacher.
All this naming business made me wonder if I should be naming my individual jewelry pieces. After all, if you look at products on the etsy marketplace (www.etsy.com) most of them have clever names. I have a few designs named such as the wave bracelet and the pot luck bracelet, but each of these has variations and the single pieces have not been named. Is it time for names? Could you offer some ideas?
The first two pieces that need clever names are pendants. I haven’t yet made a hole in each, but you can get the idea. Pendant #1
Pendant #2 (this butterfly has a crooked middle!)
All four of these pieces are up for names. If you think of something clever, please chime in and “Name that Jewel!”
First I want to say they’re all gorgeous! I particularly like the first pendant. My first thought is “Heart of the Butterfly,” but I think there’s a better name out there somewhere. For necklace #2, how about “Sailing on a Cloud”. I love the implied movement in this piece.
Oh – good ones Liz! You named the two I like best. I just learned how to do these soldered pieces and am liking the combinations. Thanks for your suggestions.
Karen, These are gorgeous!! I like #1 pendant best, with the name suggestion of “Endless Flight”, Pendant #2, “Butterfly Beauty”, and Necklace #2, “Turquoise Infinity” or “On the Slopes”. Very nice pieces! B in Texas
Good suggestions Bara. I finished #1 pendant by stringing it onto mixed beads in greens and browns. Both that piece and necklace #2 just went to a boutique in Maine. I’ll be sending the owner the names. I almost hated to see them go, but now I can make more! Oh what fun . . . it is to bead . . .
Love your pieces – I must think outside the box because I am saying the first thing that came to mind when I saw your pieces – #1 – Manta Ray – it just reminded me of the shape of a Manta swimming (not a leaf – sorry) #2 – Silent whispers – #3 – Mojave Desert (colors just reminded me of a desert landscape) and #4 – At a snail’s pace (the focal point reminded me of the shape of a snail.
Cool names Patty. I think you did a good job thinking outside the box. My ideas had not included the Manta Ray or snail replication and all of your names work well. Thanks for your contribution to the idea pot.
Love your blog, its inspiring and always thought provoking,
I know I am late in responding, but the first piece I would name “Kite Strings”
The butterfly piece I might name after the Yucatan, and call it Morning Walk, as you see the most beautiful butterflies when you take early walks in the steamy, warm climate of the Yucatan.
The third piece reminds me of birds nest, and I might call it Baby Chicks as a symbol of birth, hope and life.
Thank you for creating your wonderful jewelry and sharing your inner thoughts and internal ‘feelings”.
Hi Arleen, I’m intrigued particularly by the butterfly piece you named Morning Walk and the Yucatan connection. That was a good connection and could have a story behind it. That third piece does look a bit like a nest and you’ve given me an idea for the next one. I’m thinking that three small cabachons set in similar fashion might work well. Thanks for responding and reading what I write.
